Berio’s sonata from 2001 is a “huge, almost unplayable” piece (to quote the composer), but Vaarni has the technique to bring it off. The Schubert is entrancing, especially the haunting modulations in the opening and the airborne, dancing Minuet. ©️ 2026 American Record Guide
